Why Glass Recycling Is Important

 No. BIG Recyclers only functions because of financial support from Glass to Glass and Owens-Illinois. They have pledged their full support behind the Spoke/Hub model and are hopeful this can be replicated in other rural communities across the west.  

Because being proactive and educating now will make the transition in the future much easier and smoother. In 2030, the Extended Producer Responsibility law will begin for mandatory residential curbside recycling. We are teaching residents and businesses alike what types of glass is recyclable, and why rinsing the containers and removing everything but the label is so important. 

Yep. A huge concern. Rail transportation is only financially feasible once the 1,000 ton minimum threshold has been met. Even if we collected every bottle and jar in central and eastern Washington, that supply wouldn’t be enough. Thus we have to team up with recycling systems currently servicing large metropolitan areas like Portland and Seattle. 

Since in June 2023, we collected enough glass by May 2026 to surpass the 1,000,000 pound threshold. Every bottle, every jar, and every person’s effort adds up, and over time, something wonderful occurs.
