Glass bottles without contamination can be endlessly recycled into new bottles and don't create waste byproducts. The glass YOU recycle becomes new bottles and containers.
Glass is used and purchased by manufacturers of containers and fiberglass.
1 ton of carbon dioxide is reduced for every 6 tons of glass recycled and used.
Glass recycling industries provide almost 20,000 jobs in the US and 1 ton of recycled glass creates 8 jobs. BIG Recyclers has collected over 200,000 pounds of glass since June 2023!
Most glass customers and suppliers are within 300 miles of each other. We keep our glass on the West Coast, transporting it about 250 miles to Portland and Seattle to be remade into new bottles and containers.
People want glass recycled AND want things to be recycled not landfilled.
Depending on the color, the glass you recycle with us goes on its path to being remade into new glass containers and materials. When our dumpster in Walla Walla, WA fills up, the glass is transported to Pasco, WA for aggregation. From there, it's taken to a material recovery facility in Portland, OR for recycling into new glass containers, fiberglass insulation and glass sand. The glass is then sold back to businesses located in mostly Washington and Oregon.
We accept all glass food, beverage, and cosmetic containers! Glass dishware like dishes and Pyrex are not accepted due to their different melting point. All glass should be clean with lids removed. Labels can stay on.
Walla Walla: Airport Complex, 240 C Street, 10 am - 12 noon. Winter schedule dates include November 26, December 10 & 17; January 14 & 28; February 11 & 25; and March 11 & 25.
It is ultimately transported to Portland where the glass is remade into new glass bottles, containers, and construction materials.
BIG Recyclers is a 100% volunteer organization. Your membership or tipping fee defrays the costs of transporting the glass you drop off in Walla Walla or Dayton to facilities in Portland that will recycle the glass.
It is super easy and you never have to leave your car! When you drive up, we'll ask if you have a membership or not. Then we unload, weigh, and dump your glass. Next, depending on if you have a membership or not, you either pay by Venmo or cash or just give us your name and we will record the weight under your account.
On average, those who sign up for a membership save money. It also makes your drop-off experience even easier and supports BIG Recyclers in continuing to provide this service.
Old laundry bins or plastic tubs work great! You can also keep glass in cardboard boxes that we can either return to you or recycle at the drop-off site. The money from recycling the boxes goes to the Walla Walla Boys and Girls Club.
